Parent Note

Year 3
Purple Magic / Orange Roots

Lesson 2

8/31/2022

Picture
We started writing music notes today! Students drew quarter notes on space F.

If your child has been playing Scale In and Out with just the RH, they might want to try playing hands together this week. If your child is needing a little extra help on this activity, here's a video link that will help!

Homework: p. 20–21 Students fill in the letter names on the keyboards as assigned. Be sure to have those flashcards out every day! They won't regret it!

Caterpillar Cousins
Our old favorite caterpillar is BACK to help our finger strength, coordination, and dexterity! This time we are asking even MORE out of your little musician by requiring their hands to play in parallel motion.

Bounce and Roll
Our first repertoire piece will have your child sight reading and playing hands together. It will also teach us how to accurately execute and recognize the articulation markings for staccato and legato that we experienced physically last week!

A little Staccato and Legato humor for you...
For my convenience, I have preloaded content for the whole semester. I will update each future post with specific time-sensitive info before I send the link each week. If you choose to read ahead you might see details that don’t apply to your child’s class. For this reason I do not recommend reading ahead. Thank you!

Lesson 1

Welcome to Purple Magic!
You made it through Year 2 and now we're jumping into our final year! Here at the beginning, practice only needs to take as little as 8 to 10 minutes, 5 times a week! The activities listed are the goals for the end of the week, so refer to page 14 of the Songbook to find ideas for breaking down activities into bite-size chunks, perfect for your child!

Remember that listening to the album often is part of the weekly practice assignment and will enhance your child's learning process: Listen, Listen, Listen!.

Does your child need some extra help on Scale Out and In? Here's a video link that will help!

Just a couple reminders:
  1. Use the new Bubble Hands song and lyrics to help your child develop good posture and strong fingers. Please text or email me a picture of your child sitting at your piano/keyboard with proper posture. 928.606.2489
  2. Parents will not attend again until Lesson 5 on September 21.
  3. Check your email for an online invoice to pay the first tuition installment.

Homework: p. 18–19 Students write the note names in.

Treble, Bass, Line and Space
Time to learn all the note names on the staff! This song also teaches countermelody (a secondary melody played against a primary melody) and helps your student sing in 4-part harmony.

Bounce and Roll
Complete musicianship is more than knowing WHICH notes to play. We are now ready to add another dimension of HOW to play the notes. This song allows us to 'physically' know and understand the articulations of staccato and legato. Articulation refers to the musical performance technique that affects the transition or continuity on a single note, or between multiple notes or sounds.

As you start out this year, check out this practice tip from our Let's Play Music Blog. Here's a little 'practice humor' for you, and just for fun I have attached some fun coloring pages. Just print them off and color as you listen to our new "Royal Problem" puppet show! Can you hear the characters that you are coloring? Perform the puppet show while you look at page 60 of the HW Booklet.
