Wow! Time really does fly when you are having fun. We have already completed three-quarters of our semester. I would love to have you join us again for next semester’s Silver Button’s class. Be on the lookout for a registration email coming soon! Solfege is a method used at every level of music education to teach pitch and sight singing. The syllables allow the brain to connect more easily with pitch relationships, and hand signs add a physical element that further reinforces those relationships. Learning solfege means learning how to ‘hear’ a piece of music simply by looking at it because it develops inner hearing. It can also help a musician transcribe, improvise, and compose music.
Optional home fun activity: Cut out the horse puppet on page 31 in your workbook. (Remember, these activities are optional but can be a great bonding experience to do with your child during the week. Musical talent isn’t born, it’s grown. Children develop into musicians through experiences that include: exposure to a variety of music, opportunities to use their singing voice, and hands-on experience with instruments, among other things. Sound Beginnings allows children to explore all of these in an age-appropriate manner designed to instruct and foster further interest in musical study. Exposure to quality classical music allows children the opportunity to learn musical form, structure, rhythm, melody, phrasing, timbre, dynamics, and expression. These aural skills require the brain to perceive and organize complex and diverse sound patterns. Smart Moves dances enhance the aural experience by adding movement, making the experience more meaningful to children and strengthening the connections made in the brain.
Optional home fun activity: Color the Royal Parade coloring page on page 16 in your workbook. (Remember, these activities are optional but can be a great bonding experience to do with your child during the week.) Sound Beginnings incorporates seven basic elements in every class period: Literacy and Kindergarten Skills, Rhythm and Beat, Vocal and Pitch Development, Fine Motor Skills, Gross Motor Skills, Classical Music Experience and Parent Bonding. These elements give children a rich foundation for further music study, school, and life. Nursery rhymes are a rich oral tradition used for centuries to pass stories from one generation to the next. They are included in the Sound Beginnings curriculum because they boost language development by introducing speech patterns and rhyming words, making them a fun way to prepare for further literacy skills.
Fun Fact: ‘Humpty Dumpty’ is believed to refer to a large cannon used during the English civil war. The cannon’s perch on the wall was disturbed during battle and due to its heavy weight, it could not be moved to another place on the wall before the ‘king’s men’ were forced to surrender. Optional home fun activity: Make the Humpty Dumpty puppet on page 31 in your workbook. (Remember, these activities are optional but can be a great bonding experience to do with your child during the week.) |
